Abu Dhabi:Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has successfully performed a complex, fully robotic preventive colorectal surgery on a 37-year-old woman diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP). This rare inherited condition poses an almost certain risk of developing colon cancer if not treated.
According to Emirates News Agency, the surgical procedure involved a total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, which includes removing the entire colon and rectum and creating a new internal pouch from the small intestine to restore bowel function. The patient also required a temporary ileostomy for three months.
The use of robotic technology throughout the procedure allowed for enhanced precision in the confined pelvic space, which improves visualization and nerve preservation. This technology is crucial for maintaining urinary and bowel function, reducing postoperative pain, and supporting quicker recovery.
Dr. John H. Rodriguez, the Institute Chief of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Digestive Disease Institute, highlighted that the combination of early diagnosis and robotic precision significantly alters a patient's life trajectory, showcasing the future of proactive healthcare.
Dr. Ali Al Jaberi, a Staff Physician in Colorectal Surgery at the institute, emphasized the importance of removing the colon before cancer develops, particularly in young patients. This approach helps them achieve the best possible outcomes and return to active lives.
