Abu dhabi: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside of the oil and gas sector, has finalized its acquisition of an 80 percent stake in the Italian aluminium recycling company Eco Green. This acquisition, initially announced in April, has successfully navigated all necessary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
According to Emirates News Agency, EGA is expanding its global aluminium recycling operations to address the growing demand for low-carbon aluminium worldwide. With the inclusion of Eco Green, EGA's aluminium recycling capacity now exceeds 400 thousand tonnes annually across the UAE, United States, Germany, and Italy, with an additional 200 thousand tonnes under development. Europe, excluding Russia, ranks as the world's third-largest recycled aluminium market, following the United States and China. EGA is a significant supplier of primary aluminium to Europe, delivering approximately 600 thousand tonnes annually to European industries.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, expressed that Eco Green enhances EGA's role as a partner for Europe's green initiatives and strengthens its expanding global aluminium recycling business. The acquisition also boosts EGA's capabilities in Europe's aluminium scrap market, which is vital for its growing recycling operations across the continent. Luca Scappini, Chief Executive Officer of Eco Green, stated that joining EGA will unlock further growth potential and provide better products and services to customers while creating more opportunities for the workforce.
Eco Green, founded by the Scappini family in 1993, remains partially under family ownership, with family members continuing in management roles. The company will be rebranded as EGA Eco Green. Eco Green operates two plants in northeast Italy, specializing in aluminium scrap collection, sorting, casting, and dross processing, distributing over 70 thousand tonnes annually. The company plans to expand its facility in Nogara di Verona to increase recycled aluminium capacity by 20 thousand tonnes annually by December 2026. Eco Green serves more than 60 customers across Europe and maintains a network of over 350 aluminium scrap suppliers.
In addition to its operations in Italy, EGA acquired EGA Leichtmetall in Germany in 2024 and announced an expansion project to increase its recycling capacity significantly. Furthermore, in the United States, EGA acquired 80 percent of EGA Spectro Alloys in 2024, with a completed expansion in July 2025 boosting its production capacity to 165 thousand tonnes annually, with further expansion underway. In the UAE, EGA is ramping up production at the Al Taweelah recycling plant, the largest in the country, with a capacity of 185 thousand tonnes per year.
