Abu Dhabi: The Sixth Forum of the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC) is set to commence from November 19-21, 2024, in Abu Dhabi. Convened by Arigatou International and hosted by the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities (IAFSC), the forum aims to address pressing challenges that children face worldwide, including hunger, abuse, and violence, compounded by armed conflict, poverty, and climate change.
According to Emirates News Agency, millions of children across the globe are experiencing life-threatening conditions, with one in four at risk of severe malnutrition and one in six growing up in conflict zones. A recent UN report highlights an alarming rise in various forms of violence against children, both online and offline. The GNRC Sixth Forum, titled “The Child is Calling: Interfaith Cooperation to Build a Hopeful World for Children,” seeks to prioritize the voices and rights of children by uniting stakeholders for a safer and more sustainable world.
Rev. Keishi Miyamoto, President of Ari
gatou International and Convenor of the GNRC, emphasized the enduring belief in the power of faith, unity, and hope. The forum will feature discussions and panels with faith leaders, UN representatives, and various organizations to review progress since the GNRC Fifth Forum in 2017 and make commitments to transform the current global crisis into a safer environment for children.
Abu Dhabi was selected as the host city due to the UAE’s dedication to promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence, reflecting its leadership in international cooperation and conflict resolution. The forum will address themes such as digital safety, family roles, resilience building, mental health, and the impact of conflict on children. Discussions will also focus on building a peaceful and inclusive world by tackling xenophobia, hate crimes, and extremism.
Kul Gautam, Chairman of the Sixth Forum International Organizing Committee, emphasized the urgency of the forum’s theme in light of current global tragedies involving children.
Dana Humaid, President of the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities, highlighted the importance of collaboration among faith communities, governments, and organizations to safeguard children’s wellbeing.
The final day will focus on sustainability, exploring responsible lifestyles, child poverty, education for sustainable development, and climate-conscious stewardship. The forum will conclude with the adoption of the Abu Dhabi Declaration and a joint Plan of Action. Since its inception nearly 25 years ago, GNRC initiatives have positively impacted 100 million people globally, with significant outreach achieved through the 10 Panama Commitments to End Violence Against Children launched in 2017.
Approximately 600 participants, including 100 children, are expected to attend the forum, which will also be broadcast via the GNRC’s media channels.
