ICC Prosecutor warns Israel of invading Rafah

New York: The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, expressed his deep concern about the Israeli shelling of Rafah and the possible Israeli ground incursion into it.

In a press release, Khan said that his office “is conducting an ongoing and active investigation into the situation in the State of Palestine, and is proceeding with this matter as a matter of utmost urgency, with the aim of bringing to justice those responsible for the crimes set out in the Rome Statute.”

Khan stressed that “all wars have rules, and the laws applicable to armed conflict cannot be interpreted in a way that renders them hollow or meaningless,” adding, “This is my constant message, including from Ramallah last year.”

Khan continued, “Since then, I have not seen any noticeable change in Israel’s behavior.”

“As I have repeatedly stressed, those who do not comply with the law should not later complain when my office takes action in accordance with its mandate,” he added.

He said that his office will ac
tively investigate any alleged crimes committed and that those who break the law will be held accountable, calling for the immediate release of all detainees “as this is also a key focus of our investigations.”
