Geneva: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have jointly declared that "every attack on a humanitarian is an attack on the community they served." This statement underscores the organizations' concerns over the rising violence against humanitarian workers globally.
According to Emirates News Agency, the statement was issued by Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the ICRC, and Kate Forbes, President of the IFRC, to mark World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. They expressed their sorrow for colleagues killed while performing their duties to save lives, emphasizing the need for action rather than just expressions of outrage.
The statement highlighted the international community's failure to address violations of the rules of war, noting that humanitarian workers are increasingly targeted. It specifically referenced the killing of staff from the Palestine Red Crescent Society in March, which drew significant international attention. The leaders stressed that such incidents are not isolated, as workers face threats while carrying out vital tasks like driving ambulances and distributing aid.
The organizations revealed alarming statistics, reporting the loss of 10 colleagues this year alone. The previous year was noted as the deadliest on record for humanitarian workers, with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement losing 38 staff and volunteers. There is concern that 2025 could see even higher numbers if the current trend continues.
They concluded by urging states and parties involved in conflicts to take immediate responsibility for this issue. The call to action includes protecting humanitarian workers, upholding international humanitarian law, and advocating for shared humanity. The urgency of reversing this dangerous trend was emphasized as crucial.
