Indonesia Projects 100% Trade Increase with EAEU Post-FTA Ratification

Jakarta: Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso has announced a significant projection for trade between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), anticipating a 100% increase following the ratification of the Indonesia-EAEU Free Trade Agreement (I-EAEU FTA) by the end of the year. According to Emirates News Agency, the minister expressed optimism about the potential growth, stating, "We target our trade to multiply, up to 100%." The agreement will enable Indonesian products to enter EAEU member countries-Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan-without incurring tariffs. Santoso highlighted Indonesia's substantial market potential within the EAEU region, noting that the country also imports key commodities such as wheat and fertilizers from these nations. Indonesian goods with promising market opportunities in the EAEU include crude palm oil, textiles, manufacturing, agriculture, and fishery products. In 2024, the trade value between Indonesia and the EAEU reached US$4.1 billion. Indo nesian exports to the EAEU amounted to US$1.5 billion, marking a 36% increase from the previous year, while imports from the EAEU decreased by 4% to US$2.4 billion. The formal signing of the I-EAEU FTA is scheduled to occur during the EAEU Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 20-21, 2025. The agreement is expected to be endorsed by trade ministers and witnessed by heads of state attending the summit. In preparation for this, EAEU member states are working to ratify the I-EAEU FTA draft within their national legislatures, while Indonesia and the EAEU coordinate to finalize the signing date.
