International Rain Enhancement Forum Wraps Up Seventh Edition in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: The International Rain Enhancement Forum (IREF) concluded its seventh edition today at Conrad Abu Dhabi at Etihad Towers. Organized by the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) through the UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP), the event featured panel discussions and presentations focused on five strategic pillars: Collaboration, Innovation, Capacity Building, Artificial Intelligence, and Applied Research.

According to Emirates News Agency, the three-day forum attracted over 600 participants, including scientists, researchers, and specialists in weather modification and rain enhancement science. It also featured more than 50 high-profile speakers from around the world, including leading experts and policymakers who discussed topics such as Artificial Intelligence in weather modification, innovations in Autonomous Aerial Systems, and advancements in Cloud Seeding Materials, alongside efforts to engage youth.

A significant highlight of the event, which marked UAEREP's 10th anniversary, was the launch of the programme's 6th cycle for submission of innovative research proposals. This cycle offers a grant of up to US$1.5 million (AED 5.511 million) for each winning project proposal. The grant will be distributed among up to three innovative research projects over three years, with a maximum annual amount of US$550K.

During the Forum, H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs, honored several distinguished local and international figures and institutions for their contributions to the programme's establishment and leadership over the past decade.

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director-General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), emphasized the UAE's commitment to water security and innovation in weather modification. He highlighted the growing role of IREF as a platform for international experts to advance discussions on securing global water resources, particularly in regions facing water scarcity.

Alya Al Mazrouei, Director of UAEREP, underscored the forum's role in advancing scientific research and promoting global dialogue on water security and climate resilience. She expressed optimism about the contributions of the forum's discussions and studies to the progress of rain enhancement science and encouraged proposals for the Sixth Cycle of UAEREP to help communities facing water scarcity challenges worldwide.
