Minister of Local Government reviews with the German Ambassador, joint projects and ways to develop them.

The Minister of Local Government, Badr Al-Deen Al-Tomi, discussed with the German Ambassador to Libya, Michael Ohnmacht, joint projects and ways to develop them.

The meeting, which was held yesterday at the Minister’s office in Tripoli, reviewed the results of the Minister’s visit to Germany last March and also discussed the projects that the Ministry is working on in coordination with the German Embassy and in partnership with the German Cooperation Foundation, which is considered one of the most important international partners in the project to transform towards decentralization.

The meeting discussed the importance of the statement of the mayors of Libya’s municipalities about the legal rights and gains of municipalities in terms of competencies, powers, and decentralized resources, which was issued by the mayors of municipalities at the first meeting of the High Council of Local Administration for 2023, which was held on April 5, 2023.

Ohnmacht stressed the importance of preserving the gains of local administration, continuing to empower the municipalities with their specializations, adhering to the path of transition to decentralization, and protecting this path in all legal and constitutional ways.

During the meeting, they also discussed a number of issues of common interest between the two countries, the most important of which is the file of renewable energy, as Libya seeks to enter this field strongly and is currently working in cooperation with the German Cooperation Foundation to prepare the infrastructure, whether legislative or human resources, to ensure real successes when starting implementation. In this regard, Ohnmacht stressed the real desire of German companies to enter Libya in this field.

On the other hand, the efforts of the UN envoy, Abdoulaye Bathily, to end transitional stages and hold elections were discussed, and they stressed the importance of supporting Bathily’s efforts.

In the conclusion of the meeting, the need for continued communication and follow-up on the files that are being worked on jointly was affirmed, and ways to develop prospects for cooperation were discussed.

The meeting was attended by “Christian Krause” responsible for cooperation from the German side, and “Ayman Belqasim”, deputy secretary-general of the High Council for Local Administration, “Monsef Al-Mukhtar”, director of the Solid and Liquid Waste Department, and “Shadia Oreibi”, director of the Cooperation and Organizations Affairs Office.
