The Jordan Green Building Council (JordanGBC), in partnership with the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), has launched Tuesday a strategic action plan to promote circular economy concepts, which focus on reusing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible, in the construction and mining industries to enable actors to transition towards a low-carbon and high-efficiency sector, while enhancing their productivity and competitiveness.
The plan includes a set of recommendations for government institutions to formulate public policies supportive of the green transition, in addition to a proposed set of measures directed at the private sector.
Among the highlights of the strategic plan to promote the green economy in the construction industries is the preparation of a marketing study to assess the needs of the markets in Jordan, the region and the world for green construction materials; a study to identify and assess the market needs for information on green economy; a study to analyze the possibility of applying carbon dioxide capture and storage technology in Jordan; and the establishment of a stakeholder group with membership in the public and private sectors to guide and manage the transition to a circular economy in the construction industries sector.
The plan also included conducting an inventory to calculate a baseline of greenhouse gas emissions and identifying voluntary reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, developing and implementing a digital mechanism for reporting reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in the sector, building a digital platform for disseminating circular economy knowledge and practices, developing a strategy for trading commercial carbon in anticipation of the establishment of a carbon trading system in Jordan, in addition to developing and implementing a capacity building program for the construction industries sector to obtain green finance.
Additionally, it included the development and implementation of a program to build the capacity of the banking sector to develop green financing services and assess environmental and social considerations related to governance in the investment decision-making process, in addition to developing and preparing an educational curriculum to train employees on means of applying the principles of circular economy in the construction industries sector.
This particular circular economy approach targets intermediate materials or final products that can be used in construction processes, especially buildings, such as building stones, tiles, marble slabs, crushed sand by-products, materials for structural insulation, cement and others.
