Tokyo: The first tanker carrying Russian crude oil since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East is expected to arrive in Japan as early as Monday. This development marks a significant logistical achievement, as the closure had posed challenges for global oil transportation.
According to Emirates News Agency, the tanker is delivering crude oil imported by Taiyo Oil to the company's refinery facility located in Ehime Prefecture. The oil originates from the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project in Russia's far east. Notably, this project is exempt from Western sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
The Oman-flagged tanker, named Voyager, departed from Sakhalin in late April. This information was confirmed by the vessel location information website Marine Traffic, which tracks the movement of ships globally.
